Billy Elliot the Musical is based on the 2000 film Billy Elliot. A talented young boy becomes torn between his unexpected love of dance and the disintegration of his family.

Billy Elliot revolves around motherless Billy, who trades boxing gloves for ballet shoes. This is story of his personal struggle and fulfillments are balanced against a counter-story of family and community strife caused by the UK miners' strike. Billy is the only boy in a ballet class run by Mrs. Wilkinson and becomes attracted to the grace of the dance.

Sir Elton John gave the music. The book and the lyrics are given by lee hall. In New York, it won ten Tony Awards and ten Drama Desk Awards, including, in each case, best musical. It has also won numerous awards in Australia including a record-tying seven Helpmann Awards. The Musical won four Laurence Olivier Awards: Best New Musical, Best Actor (awarded jointly to James Lomas, George Maguire and Liam Mower, the boys who played Billy), Best Sound design and Best Choreographer. It also won the Evening Standard Award as well as the Critics’ Circle Award and the Theatergoers’ Choice Award, all for Best Musical.

Choreographer Peter Darling has created movement for everyone in the cast – kids and grandmothers, miners, Bobbies, the National Guard, Durham citizens, girls in ballet class, and a bona fide Billy of the future who dances a duet with Billy of the present that lifts the kid into the stratosphere. The singing is terrific. The choreography is rich and inventive.

Billy’s story of growing up in a working class household and having artistic ambitions has so many parallels with ours life.
